What is Kenya eTA

eTA Kenya is a travel authorization for all arriving foreigners, replacing the previous eVisa since January 1, 2024. The eTA covers short‑term tourist stays (up to 90 days, with single‑entry validity), and applications must include personal details, travel dates, proof of accommodation or an invitation, and a valid passport with at least six months’ remaining validity.

This digital pre‑authorization streamlines entry: once approved, visitors simply present their eTA and passport at immigration upon arrival. Visitors from East African Community (EAC) partner states—like Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, and DR Congo—are exempt from this requirement.

About Kenya eTA and tourist visa

The electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system in Kenya was officially launched in January 2024, replacing the country’s previous eVisa program. This transition was part of Kenya’s broader strategy to modernize its immigration system while enhancing regional integration and digital efficiency. Unlike a traditional visa, the eTA serves as a simplified pre-travel screening process, allowing authorities to assess and approve travelers before arrival, without requiring a physical visa for most short-term visits.

Initially designed to streamline travel for tourists and business visitors, the Kenya eTA applies to all foreign nationals except citizens of the East African Community (EAC). Through an entirely online application process, travelers can submit their information and receive authorization via email, eliminating the need for embassy visits or lengthy paperwork. This new system has made Kenya more accessible and attractive as a destination for tourism, conferences, and short business trips.

Since its launch, the eTA system has been refined to accommodate a wide range of travelers, including those visiting for leisure, business, or transit purposes. By simplifying border entry procedures and enhancing digital processing, Kenya aims to provide a faster and more secure experience for visitors. The platform supports multiple languages, includes clear guidelines, and is integrated with airline systems to ensure compliance before boarding.

Today, Kenya’s eTA is recognized as a forward-looking model in the region, balancing ease of access with national security priorities. It plays a crucial role in promoting Kenya as a leading travel hub in East Africa, supporting the country’s ambitions in tourism growth, international investment, and seamless regional mobility.

Visa and travel requirements

Travelers to Kenya must meet certain entry and eTA requirements depending on their nationality and purpose of visit. As of 2024, all foreign nationals except East African Community (EAC) citizens are required to obtain an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before entering the country. This pre-approval must be secured online prior to departure, as visas on arrival are no longer available under the new system. A passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival is mandatory for all travelers.

The eTA is the standard entry option for tourists, short-term business visitors, and travelers in transit. The application is completed online and requires applicants to submit personal information, passport details, and a travel itinerary. In some cases, additional documents such as proof of accommodation, return ticket, or an invitation letter may be requested. Once approved, the eTA is linked electronically to the traveler’s passport and must be presented during check-in and upon arrival in Kenya.

In addition to entry requirements, travelers should be aware of health regulations, particularly if arriving from regions where Yellow Fever is present. In such cases, a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required. It’s also advisable to stay informed about current public health measures, including any COVID-19-related screening or documentation, as regulations may change.

All travelers using the eTA must enter Kenya through designated airports, land borders, or seaports, ensuring that their eTA remains valid on the day of arrival. Overstaying the authorized period or entering without proper authorization may lead to penalties or future travel restrictions. For a smooth entry, travelers should apply for their eTA well in advance and carry both digital and printed copies of the approval.
