About Ethiopia eVisa

The eVisa system in Ethiopia was launched in June 2017 as part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s immigration and border control processes. Developed by Ethiopia’s Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines, the digital platform was initially available to a limited number of nationalities. Its introduction marked a significant shift from traditional, paper-based visa applications to a more streamlined and accessible online system.

The initial phase of the eVisa program targeted tourists, aiming to boost Ethiopia’s appeal as a global travel destination. By offering an easy online application process and allowing travelers to obtain a visa without visiting an embassy, Ethiopia positioned itself as a more accessible and traveler-friendly country. Over time, the eligibility list expanded to include more countries, reflecting the government’s intent to promote tourism and economic ties through easier mobility.

As the eVisa system matured, Ethiopia added more categories beyond tourism, including business and conference visas, to accommodate the growing number of international visitors attending trade events or exploring investment opportunities. The platform has continued to evolve with enhanced security features, quicker processing, and broader accessibility, cementing the eVisa as a key component of Ethiopia’s digital transformation in travel and immigration services.

Today, the eVisa is widely used by tourists and business travelers alike and is recognized as a success story in regional digital governance. It supports Ethiopia’s goals of increasing tourism revenue, improving border security, and creating a more efficient visitor experience.

Visa and travel requirements

Travelers to Ethiopia must meet certain entry and visa requirements depending on their nationality and purpose of visit. Most foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa prior to arrival, either through the eVisa system or, in limited cases, as a Visa on Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. A valid passport with at least six months’ validityfrom the date of entry is mandatory for all visitors.

The most common option for tourists and short-term business visitors is the eVisa, which can be applied for online. Applicants must submit a digital passport photo and passport scan, along with basic personal and travel information. The eVisa is typically issued for either 30 or 90 days, depending on the traveler’s selection. Those traveling for business or attending conferences may need to provide additional documentation such as an invitation letter from a host company or institution in Ethiopia.

In addition to visa requirements, health regulations also apply. Travelers may be asked to present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or transiting through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. It is also recommended to check current health and safety advisories, especially for COVID-19-related guidelines, as these can change with little notice.

It’s important to note that travelers must enter Ethiopia through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport when using the eVisa or Visa on Arrival service. Land border crossings require prior visa approval obtained through an Ethiopian embassy or consulate. Visitors should ensure that they comply with visa validity dates and departure requirements to avoid fines or future travel restrictions.
